Australia’s political landscape must reflect nation’s diversity, say trailblazers

Despite more than a third of Australians being born overseas, 96 per cent of politicians are from a European background.

A new generation of politician is calling for action over a lack of diversity among Australia’s elected officials.

While Australia has continued to grow as a multicultural population with more than 270 identifiable ancestries, 96 per cent of politicians come from a European background, according to a 2018 Australian Human Rights Commission study.

"But something I always say is that being an athlete is 24/7... you are always what you eat; you are either training or in resting mode. It is not like a normal job, but it has its own hardships and not everyone can be like that because it is so demanding.

Family-run Vietnamese restaurant Indochine has become an institution in Box Hill, now in the hands of its second generation.

I have often wondered why a Vietnamese restaurant has survived in Box Hill, a thriving centre of Chinese cuisine with more than 1000 eateries, for more than three decades.

Indochine hasn’t just thrived; it has flourished since 1991.

From walking past, you can see there is never a dull moment, only peak or off-peak.
